Carnatic music is one of the oldest classical music traditions in the world. It originates from South India and carries centuries of cultural heritage. Known for its intricate melodic structures (ragas) and rhythmic cycles (talas), Carnatic music is a spiritual and artistic expression that has lived for generations.

Understanding Carnatic music can feel overwhelming for beginners. However, the foundational lessons designed by Purandaradasa, the father of Carnatic music, make this journey easily understandable and systematic.

Father of Carnatic Music?

Purandaradasar, a 16th-century saint-composer, is the father of Carnatic music. He systematized the teaching methodology of Carnatic music, making it accessible to people of all ages. His structured approach to teaching laid the foundation for future generations, and his compositions continue to be taught today.

Basic Carnatic Lessons for Beginners

Purandaradasar’s contributions to Carnatic music education include the creation of foundational exercises that help beginners develop their voices and understanding of pitch, rhythm, and melody. These exercises are the cornerstone of Carnatic music training.

Simple, sequential lessons:

Saptaswaras: The seven basic notes—Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni—are the foundation of all melodies in Carnatic music. These notes are equivalent to the Western solfège (Do, Re, Mi, etc.) and are taught at different speeds to develop pitch accuracy and rhythm.

Varisakal: After mastering the Saptaswaras, students move to Varisakal. These are exercises designed to help singers build control over the notes in both ascending and descending orders. These help in improving breath control and developing voice modulation.

Jantavarisakal: These are paired note exercises that introduce students to complex note combinations. Jantavarisakal is very important for teaching precision and strengthening the vocal cords, as singers have to hold and modulate two notes together at various speeds and sequences.

Key Elements of Carnatic Music Training

Raga: A raga is a melodic framework that uses the seven basic notes but introduces specific rules for which notes to emphasize or skip. Each raga evokes specific emotions and is central to Carnatic music performances.

Tala: Rhythm is as important as melody in Carnatic music, and the tala system provides rhythmic patterns for performers. Beginners typically start with Adi talam, an eight-beat cycle, to get accustomed to timing and coordination.

Alankaras: These are exercises based on different talas, and they further refine a student’s understanding of both rhythm and melody.

These lessons devised by Purandaradasar which begin with Saptaswaras and progress through Varisakal and Jantavarisakal are the bedrock of Carnatic music education. These fundamental exercises not only develop technical skills but also instill a deep appreciation for Carnatic music. For anyone eager to explore this rich musical tradition, starting with these basics offers a strong foundation for further growth and discovery.

Are you ready to start your Carnatic music journey? Begin by practicing the Saptaswaras and explore the beauty of this ancient art form. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, these foundational exercises will help strengthen your voice and rhythm.
