Welcome to my blog! I’m Dileena, and with over 20 years of experience in classical singing and 5 years of teaching, I’m passionate about helping others discover the beauty of Carnatic music.

In this post, I want to introduce you to the Saptaswaras—the seven basic notes that form the foundation of Carnatic music. These notes are essential for anyone beginning their classical music journey.

What Are the Saptaswaras?

The Saptaswaras are the seven fundamental notes: Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni, and back to Sa. By mastering these notes, you’ll build breath control, strengthen your vocal range, and develop a deep understanding of pitch—all key elements for any singer.

Why Are They Important?

Learning the Saptaswaras isn’t just about hitting the right notes. It’s about laying the groundwork for all the ragas you’ll eventually sing, helping you express emotions through your voice, and giving you the confidence to perform with precision. The skills you develop here will serve you in any genre of music.
